ALBERT V. SHELTON

My Great-Grandfather.
This photo was provided by my third cousin - Vonette Curtis.
THANK YOU, VONETTE!

Albert V. Shelton was born on November 14th, 1861 in Webster county, Kentucky to Lucinda Shelton. Albert's father has yet to be found. He may have also been a Shelton, as Lucinda was born to a Shelton, but a marriage record has not been located for her. Albert was found in the 1870 census with his mother and sisters Agnes and Sarah Ellen, Albert being the youngest in the household.

On September 21st, 1885 in Webster county, Kentucky, Albert married Miss Nora Berry (A photo of her headstone is also available for viewing.). A newspaper article on Albert indicates that he was 23 years old when he married the 16 year old Nora. Their marriage record is located in the Dixon courthouse in volume 12, on page 350.

This newspaper article also tells of the tragic fate of the children of this couple. Two sons died in their infancy, a daughter died soon after birth (although her headstone indicates that she was 4 years old, but does not list dates.), a young daughter grew to the age of about 14, married, gave birth to her one and only child and died at about the age of 15. Their other child, Winfred Cleveland Shelton, was their only child to live to adulthood. Winfred is my Grandfather. (His headstone is also posted for viewing.)

Albert was a deacon of the General Baptist Church, and made his living as a farmer. He was well loved by many. Albert also had a big heart, for he raised his sister's child, Lula, and his nephew, Joseph Finley.

Tragedy struck again, about 1905, when Albert lost his wife, Nora, to TB. After having mourned his wife for three years, Albert married again in 1908 in Vanderburgh county, Indiana, to Harriett L. Nance, known as " Hattie ". Hattie helped to raise the children in the household, but never had any herself. By 1910, Hattie and Albert were raising his grandson, Lee Walker, son of his late daughter Lee and her husband Reuben Walker.

Albert died on July 17th, 1958 in Sebree, Webster county, Kentucky from chronic organic heart disease, and arterio sclerosis (hardening of the arteries) at the age of 96. He is buried in Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, Kentucky.
