J. Z. SHELTON & ZULA FARMER

My First Cousin, Twice Removed, and his wife.
These folks are the grandparents of my dear cousin, Vonette.
This photo was provided by my third cousin - Vonette Curtis.
THANK YOU, VONETTE!

In September of 1889, two children were born. Little did they know that they would later share much. Zula Farmer was born on the 7th to Tom Farmer and Sally Epley in McLean county, Kentucky. Seven days later, on the 14th, a bouncing baby boy, JZ Shelton, was born to Winfield Scott Shelton and Annie Skudmore McMullin. JZ was the 7th of ten children born to Winfield and Annie. Winfield is the brother of my Great-grandfather, Albert V. Shelton, as listed in his death notice.

JZ and Zula were joined in marriage on February 20th, 1910 in Vanderburgh county, Indiana just across the Ohio River from Webster county, Kentucky. To this couple were born Wanda in 1913, Von Toble in 1914, James Z. in 1922, Joseph Marvin in 1924, and Emma Jean (no birth date). JZ made his living for this family as a shoemaker.

Tragedy struck this family during WWII when James Z. died in Germany in 1944. Zula passed away in 1973 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. JZ was left with possibly four of his children. No death dates are known for his daughters, Wanda and Emma Jean. JZ lost his son, Von Toble, in 1986. This son is buried in the Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, Webster County, Kentucky. (His headstone can also be found on this web site). JZ passed away in April of 1989, survived by at least his son Joseph who passed away in 1996, and is also buried in the Springdale Cemetery, in Sebree, Webster County, Kentucky.
