On December 7th, 1851 Winfield Scott Shelton was born to Lucinda Shelton in Webster county, Kentucky. Little is known about Winfield's mother. Us Shelton cousins have attempted to locate marriage records and death records for her to no avail. She is being elusive.
Annie Skudmore McMullin was born 7 years later, on November 18th, in 1858 near Petersburg in Kentucky to John McMullin. I found them in the 1860 Webster county Kentucky Federal Census. I do not know who Annie's mother was. Annie and Winfield married on November 22nd, 1875 in Springfield, Tennessee. They had ten children, however, both of their death notices do not name those who preceded them in death. Annie and Winfield had Naomi in 1876, Velmer in 1878, Daisy in 1880, Zilpha in 1882, Dillian in 1885, an infant in 1888, JZ in 1889, Joy in 1892, Durward B. in 1895, and Beatrice in 1899.
In 1911, Annie and Winfield lost their first child, Velmer. She is buried in the Springdale Cemetery in Webster county, Kentucky. Another daughter also predeceased them in 1922, Zilpha. Only 5 years later, Winfield died on February 14th, 1927, and was also buried in the Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, Webster County, Kentucky. Annie survived him by twenty years and died in 1947. She is buried beside Winfield in the Springdale Cemetery.
Winfield's death notice tells us that he was survived by only two of his three siblings - Albert V. Shelton, my Great-grandfather, and a sister, Agnes Shelton Willoughby. This death notice helped to prove my connections to this family and the entire lines back to 1700's in Virginia for me. Winfield and Annie were survived by at least four of their children: Naomi, who died in 1968, Daisy who died in 1961, Dilliam who died in 1966, and JZ who died in 1989.
