David Day is my 3X Great-Grandfather on my father's side of the family tree. Funny thing is...so is his brother, Jonathan Jefferson Day! Yes, I descend from both of these men. That also means that I have lost an extra set of 4X Great-grandparents.
David Day owned a lot of land in the Rosetta/Crosby area of Mississippi. The railroad wanted to put a line there and he agreed...with one stipulation - The railroad had to put a post office there and name David the Postmaster. The town of Dayton, now known as Crosby, grew up around the post office.
David fathered a total of 14 children and was married twice. I descend through the son of his first wife, Mahala Arsilla Byrd. Their son, my 2x Great-grandfather, was Bythrall Day. When David remarried, he gave land to each of his children from his marriage as their inheritance. The remainder was to be divided among his children from his second marriage upon his death and the death of his second wife, Mary Indiana Hastings. She is sitting beside David in the family portrait. Mary is also my first cousin 4 times removed - through the Ashley lines.
