Nellie May Thomas was born on June 7th, 1898 in Sebree, Webster county, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Mark L. Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Cutrell. Her siblings were: Solie, James R., Maggie, E. V., John, Minnie Bell, and Bessie. Nellie married Winfred Cleveland Shelton, Sr. on February 3rd, 1916 in Kentucky. They had seven children (in no particular order): Lenora, Louise, Lloyd, James, Wilma Doris, Winfred Cleveland Jr., and Sherley (who later in life changed his first name to David).
Nellie is holding her granddaughter, Tina Marie King (me!), in the photo. She occasionally came to Evansville to visit with her children. This was one such visit.
Nellie was divorced from Winfred Shelton, and later married a Benjamin Kuntzner by which she had two more children: Caroline and Johnny. It is unknown (by me) if she was divorced from him or widowed. She moved to El Paso, Texas where she passed away on November 9th, 1972 and was buried in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
