Reuben Anderson Melton was born on April 12, 1814 in Henderson county, Kentucky (according to census records). He married Sarah A. Shelton (My 3X Great-Aunt) on December 30th, 1841 in Henderson county, Kentucky. He and Sarah had thirteen children: John Wesley, Floyd C., Mary E., James M., David J., Louisa C., Larkin W., Jesse James, Louis A., Thomas, Lee, Sarah, and Reuben.
Reuben was a farmer according to the 1850 Henderson county, Kentucky census and the 1860 Webster county, Kentucky census.
Reuben died on May 3rd, 1879 and is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery.
