Winfred Cleveland Shelton, Sr.

Winfred Cleveland Shelton Sr. was born on October 16th, 1894 in Sebree, Webster county, Kentucky to Albert V. Shelton and Nora Berry. He was one of five children, but the only one to survive to adulthood. Three siblings died in their infancy, and one sister, Lee, lived long enough to marry at the age of about 14 years old and died after having a son in 1904.

Winfred was a farmer. He wed Nellie May Thomas on February 3rd, 1916. They had seven children: Lenora, Louise, Lloyd, James, Wilma Doris (my mother), Winfred Cleveland Jr., and Sherley (who later in adulthood changed his name to David - a more masculine name.) Winfred and Nellie divorced sometime in the sixties, I believe. I do not ever recall having seen them together as a couple.

Winfred liked to play solitaire. He is pictured above in my mother's living room playing cards and waiting for Thanksgiving dinner. Grandpa didn't visit very often.

Winfred lived with his daughter, Lenora, in Evansville, Indiana up until his death on January 10th, 1972. He is buried at Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, Webster county, Kentucky.
