WHICH HENRY MARRIED JOHN CLARKE'S DAUGHTER?

Jeanne Galau summarizes the land records collected by herself and others which give a picture of the life of Henry King who started in Isle of Wight County. She continues with a deed from Surry Co, VA, Deeds & Wills Bk 3 p 13. John Clarke of Surry Co VA to Henry King, son-in-law, carpenter, Isle of Wight Co, VA, and his wife Katherine King my daughter.... 100 acres in Surry Co bounded by Edward Browne. Grandsons William and Henry King. Deep Creek. Reference is made to Surry Co Tithable list which shows that John Clarke was in Lawnes Parish.

It is thought that Katherine had another son, John, before she died. by 1689 Henry is in Charles City Co, admr of the estate of David Williams, Henry having married David's widow, Sarah Williams.

By 1704 Henry was in Prince George Co. In 1716 he owed a debt to the estate of Eusebius King. In a deed in 1740 in Brunswick Co, VA, Henry deeds everything he owns to son Charles King. He had ded by 1744. (There is a lot more about his life in Jeane's work.)

In Jan 1, 1726, Surry Co VA Deed Bk 7, Henry King Jr of Brunswick Co, VA, sells 100 acres in Lawnes Parish, Surry Co, bounded by Edward Browne and John Atkins. This would seem to be the same land deeded to Henry and Katherine in 1682.

However, the 1682 deed of John Clark to Henry and Katherine King is also quoted in "Lees and Kings of VA and NC" by Wilson and Glover, in their work on the descendants of Michael King of Nansemond Co VA. It appears to me that the book they cited which gave the marriage of Henry to Katherine as 1784 was actually referring to the same deed book, suggesting that they were married by that time, not claiming they got married that year. Wilson and Glover suggested Henry had first married Elizabeth Clarke. William, mentioned by John Clarke as a grandson, is not mentioned in Henry's will.

Various deeds of this Henry are given, establishing him in Nansemond Co and by 1697 in Chowan Co. He also lived in Gates Co, NC. He died between 1714 and 1716. He didn't mention his wife in his will. However, his widow Catherine, had married Gerrard Linch in 1716 when a petition to divide Henry's esate was filed in Perquimans Co, NC.

From these records and others named by both researchers, it seems clear that the Henry King of the Nansemond Co VA family did not marry the daughter of John Clarke, but did marry some other Katherine.
