FOURTH GENERATION - HENRY KING(1555)

Henry King(1555) is shown to be a brother of Solomon King(1554) and thus a son of Charles King(155) by another entry in Solomon's Bible. The entry states -

"Henry King Brother to Solomon King Departed this Life April the 15 day 1782"

Henry bought land on Rocquist Pocosin near his brothers in 1754. The Bertie County deed has the wording "to Henry King, son of Charles King of Chowan County". Henry later exchanged this land for the 461 acres in Chowan County that Solomon had received from his father in 1753. With this exchange both Solomon and Henry lived on part of the land patented by William(15) in 1703. Henry wrote his will in January of 1782 and it was probated in the November Court with Solomon King(1554) and Mary King, wife of Henry the executor and executrix. This validated the entry found in the Bible.

The wife of Henry was Mary Goodman, daughter of William Goodman. It is possible that Henry had been earlier married to Elizabeth Williams, widow of James Williams, who lived on Rocquist Pocosin and died in 1738. Elizabeth did indeed remarry someone named Henry King, however, I have not proven that this is the one. This appears to be a second marriage for Henry(1555) as all his children were minors when he died and he was certainly an adult as early as 1754. After the death of Henry his widow married Abel Cross.

Military records at the Archives show that Henry King(1555) was a Captain in the Draft made out of the militia of Hertford County in 1778 to form the third Continental Army. It must be remembered that Gates County weas partly formed from Hertford County in 1779.
