CHARLES KING(155)

Charles King(155) was likely born about 1695. I have already shown that he obtained 461 acres of land, part of which had been granted to his father William King(15) in 1703. In early land records of Chowan County the land was described as being on King's Branch of Cypress Swamp. On current maps of the area, now in Gates County, it is referred to as J ordan-Lassiter Branch. Like his brother Henry(154) Charles also appeared prominently in the records of Chowan County. He was for most of his life the Captain of Militia for the northwest corner of the county. He was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Royal Governor and was a Vestryman in St. Pauls Vestry which covered the northern part of Chowan County. According to Solomon's Bible record his wife was Mary, surname unknown. Also according to this Bible record Charles died 15 January 1762. Although county records have not survived State records show that his estate was administered by Henry King in 1762. It cannot be determined if it was administered by his brother or by his son.

Two of the sons of Charles King(155) have been identified in the Bible record. Surviving land records have resulted in the identification of three other sons. There were probably also daughters, however, their names are not known.

FOURTH GENERATION - CHARLES KING(1551)

Charles King(1551) in 1748 was living on land in Bertie County on Rocquist Pocosin purchased by his father in 1742. Rocquist Pocosin is not to be confused with the area around Salmon Creek where their King cousins lived. The 1742 deed in which the land was purchased by Charles King(155) identifies him as being from Chowan County. He did not live in Bertie County as shown by tax records. It is likely that the land was purchased for his sons. It will eventually be shown that all five sons of Charles King(155) lived on Rocquist Pocosin at one time or the other. In 1748 Charles(1551) acquired additional land from William King(1552) and the deed from William identified Charles as "my loving brother".

Charles King(1551) lived on this land and additional land that he purchased the remainder of his life. His first wife was Judith Wimberley, daughter of Thomas Wimberley who died in 1752. The marriage was probably between 1750 and 1755. Charles later married Mildred Benton on 12 December 1787. He wrote his will in Bertie County in 1817 and died the following year, probably about ninety years of age. His will and estate papers identify his children. Other information pertaining to the children are from land records.

FOURTH GENERATION - WILLIAM KING(1552)

William King was shown to be a resident of Rocquist Pocosin in Bertie County in 1748 when he gave his brother Charles King(1551) land. William married his cousin Elizabeth King(1543), daughter of Henry King(154). He built a house on Rocquist Pocosin which, about 12 years ago, was moved to the Hope Plantation west of Windsor, Bertie County and restored. The home is maintained by the State and is preserved as a historic monument. William lived as neighbor to his brother Charles on Rocquist the remainder of his life. At other times his other three brothers also lived on Rocquist as neighbors. William wrote his will and died in 1778 in Bertie County. His widow, Elizabeth, later married Morgan Dwyer, a school teacher.

Michael King first appeared in the records of Bertie County as witness to a deed along with Charles King(1551) in 1746. He married Mary Hobson, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Hobson of Bertie County. He initially lived on Rocquist adjoining his brothers, but later accompanied his wife's parents to Beaufort County where he purchased land in 1752. He remained there until 1757 when he sold the land and returned to Bertie County, again buying land on Rocquist. By 1780 he had disposed of this land and was living in Windsor, County seat of Bertie County. In 1792 he bought land in adjoining Martin County where he lived the remainder of his life. He died in 1795 and left a will.
