Since 1907, it has been thought that William King, the son of Michael King the immigrant, was the William who married Mary Curle, who lived at Elizabeth City Co VA. People may have noticed some of the inconsistencies in this idea, but it is a little bit daunting to haul off and say the pretigious William and Mary Quarterly is wrong, so no one had, until HLK came along and proved by land records and Solomon King's Bible that the William King who was the son of Michael had a different family.
John King, son of Michael) seems to have been the only one of this family to have settled in Elizabeth City Co VA. That John is known to have had a son William. Mary Curle's father lived in Elizabeth City Co. The fact that she lived until 1778 is not so troubling if her husband was in fact a son of John. This has become the WORKING HYPOTHESIS.
On page 99 in W & G, I noted that Mary King who m Jessie Hare is probably an error (who knows, she might have married a Jessie Hare first, although there is no evidence given to explain that. You have to really stay awake to sort out all of this information.) At any rate, she is not the aunt of Solomon King, whose Bible has furnished needed info to this cause. That Mary Hare died in 1771 while this Mary was still living in 1778.
"Wills and Administrations of Elizabeth Cityy County, Va. 1688-1800" by
Blanche Chapman.
"KING, Mary. Leg. - daughter Mary Hudson, with reversion of bequest to
her children; daughter Rosea Latimer, with reversion to her children;
son William King; granddaughter Mary Curle-----the daughter of
William King, with reversion to her children if no such children
reversion to my grandson John Curle King; to grandsons Thomas and
William King. Exrs Mr. Miles King and Mr. Henry Jenkins. D. October 14,
1778. P. December 24, 1778."
From this, it seems apparent that William and Mary had daus Mary (Hudson) and Rosea (Latimer). They had a son William, who had been the heir when his father died. The grandchildren are the children of William4, son of William3 and Mary? So in 1778, William had children John C, Thomas and William.
In the next paragraph W & G give the children of William4 (William3, John2, Michael1) as Judith Curle King, a dau who m Owings; sons Joshua C, Henry J, John C, William. William's son Thomas mentioned in 1778 must havedied 1778/1796. This is from the will of Hannah King 1796 Eliz city Co.
For an age range, I am assuming John2 was born 1660/1670. His children, including William3, would probably have been born 1690/1710. William4 would likely have been born 1730/1740, and his children John Curle King, Thomas and William would then most likely have been born about 1770's. So, this is another good indication that it was correct to move that family from my listing as children of William to the next generation as children of John.
On p 100 of W & G, I am assuming that William3 and wife Mary did not have a son Charles because a Charles is not named in Mary's estate papers. Also, the assumption seems to be that William's son Charles had a son Solomon, and that Charles belonged to William the son of Michael, not William the son of John.
Now how about Henry listed on p 100 as a child of William3 and Mary? I tend to think they got him from the land records, too, but HLK doesn't show a son Thomas for Henry the son of William the son of Michael. HLK says he doesn't find a Thomas King mentioned in Chowan Co.
Now, going back to page 113 of W & G, which is where all the above people seem to belong, it seems to me the page numbers referenced in Chapman are the same so I feel we are talking about the same person. It would be interesting to know how it came to be that Mary King, wife of William, was paying the orphans of Michael King, presumably William's brother who died in 1735 (W & G 110) The inference is that William3 must have been acting as guardian for his brother's children, or holding property for them or otherwise had owed his brother money payable to his heirs.
I know of at least one researcher who wants to do some more work on this family, so I look forward to hearing the results.
