SOURCES AND DISCUSSION FOR JOHN KING (Michael3, Henry2, Michael)

John King lived in the same area as his brothers, Michael and Henry, and witnessed the will of their father-in-law, Roger Snell. HLK found a deed which mentions that he was "of Craven Co SC." In NC he had a wife Senea, but seemingly married Amey later.

From Pauline Brand (pegmar@thenet.net)
John King moved from Duplin-Sampson Co NC with the Bell, Byrd and Ratcliff families to the Lynches Creek area of early Craven Co, SC (later Sumter). He later obtained land and relocated further west in that portion which became Fairfield Co SC. He actually died in Fairfield Co. His son John King Jr went to NC and was en route to the Mississippi territory when the estate of his father, John King Sr, had to probated in Montgomery Co, TN. The executors of John's will were to sons Moses, John and son-in-law Charles Pickett. Moses and John Jr refused; Charles Pickett had already died. Francis Long, then in Montgomery Co, TN with Selah (King) Pickett, his mother-in-law, was appointed administrator of John King's will (and also that of Charles Pickett?)

to show that John was the son of Michael, HLK mention "Fairfield County, SC Minutes of county Court, 1785-1799 by Brent Holcom. On page 170, is found:
Tuesday the 16th Day of Jul 1799
The citation on the estate Michael King was returned into court duly certified. Whereupon ordered that letters of administration be granted to John King the person named in said Citation, Who is to administer with the Will anexed and the Testator being in the State of North Carolina, the original will was proved and lodged in the Secretaries Office of that State. An authenticated copy of the same is ordered to be filed in Office of the Clerk of this Court. He naming John Hollis, Moses Hollis and William Robertson to be bound in the sum of three thousand pounds five hundred sterling. John King, Josiah Knighten, Thomas Stark, Nicholas Peay and Moses Knighton were appointed appraisers. (Note that I had a note showing this will was recorded in SC in 1787, which I can't seem to find at this point. Was that date an error?)

On 20 Jul 1795 , in Fairfield Co Book 1 p 437 (Court Records?) Moses Smith of Burke Co GA, bound to John King of Fairfield Co SC, in the sum of 20,000 pounds sterling, the condition being that Moses Smith and wife Catherine Smith sell all the negroes that John King had in his hands and all in the hands of Michael King, deceased in NC.

Michael King who died in 1741 in Bertie Co NC left several slaves that with their increase were to revert to his children at his wife's death. In Fairfield Co SC Bk P p 204, 27 Nov 1795, John King Sr paid $1005 "in full of all demands of Edward Byrd and his wife Mary for a share of the negroes left Mary Byrd by her father Michael King after the decease of her mother, Isabella, wife of said King"

The will of John King is shown in Wilson and Glover page 125
John King made his will in Fairfield Co SC on 13 Sep 1805 and it was probated in Montgomery Co, TN, Jan term 1808.

HLK found an abstract of the above will in "Abstracts of Wills and Records, Books A & B, Montgomery County, Tennessee-1796-1818: by Anita Whitfield Darnell. Following the will are several items pertaining to the estate.
Suit by Edward Bird against John King in Montgomery Co. John King has died since suit was instituted. Charles Pickett also deceased. Executors John and Moses King decline to act. Nathan King (of where?) only acting executor appoints Frances Long of Montgomery Co his attorney. Dated Mar 18, 1808.

Power of Attorney from Selah Pickett of Fairfax Dist (Fairfield?) SC and now of Montgomery Co, TN to son-in-law Francis Long to collect what is owing me from deceased husband Charles Pickett. 18 Mar 1808

As HLK says, this seems to indicate that John King died in Montgomery Co, TN, but it could be another case of wrapping up the disposal of slaves.

We believe that Amey was a Ratcliff because John King administered the estate of Samuel Ratcliff in Craven Co, SC.

"King-Bell-Byrd mess"
(Included here because indicates consistency of research)
Michael King Sr b ca 1698 m Isabella Bell
Catherine King b ca 1700 m John Byrd II
William Byrd b ca 1704 m Jean Bell
George Bell m Ann Byrd b ca 1702

Michael and Catherine King were siblings. Isabella, Jean and George Bell were siblings. John, William and Ann Byrd were siblings.

Their parents were: Henry King and Catherine ? Robert Bell and Ann (Fergeson?) John Byrd I and Rebecca Sutton

My (Pauline Brandy) primary focus is on the Ratcliff family who moved with the King-Bell-Byrd group into SC by c1764.

LAND RECORDS
1762, Oct. 22 - North Carolina Patents, Book 13, p. 359
(this same patent is also found in Book 15, p. 439. I don't know why the double entry. John King patented 100 acres on the SS of Six Runs Swamp adjoining Joseph Eason.

1763, Aug. 9 - Sampson County Deed Book 1, p. 343
(all early Duplin County deeds, up to 1784, are found in the records of Sampson County. The strange thing is that normally the records would be expected to have remained in Duplin County as that is the oldest county and Sampson County was formed from it. What this probably means is that courthouse where the records were kept ended up in Sampson County. So if you want to examine the early deed books of Duplin County you go to the County seat of Sampson County.) John King sold William Fryer 100 acres granted to said King by patent 22 Oct. 1762 on SS of Six Runs Swamp. Wit: Roger Snell, John Bell

1764, Jul. 24 - Michael King sold John King 300 acres at a place called Six Runs, granted unto said Michael King 15 Nov. 1762. Wit: William Byrd, Samson Young
