SECOND GENERATION - HENRY KING(14)

Henry King(14) first appeared in the records of the Colony of North Carolina in 1701 when he patented 302 acres on the Middle Swamp of Bennetts Creek. The land adjoined an earlier patent to John King(13). By 1714 he was living on Salmon Creek of what was then Chowan Precinct of Albemarle County, but is now Bertie County. Henry died in 1716, leaving a will written in 1714. Court documents show that Catherine King, widow of Henry King, was married to Gerrard Lynch in 1717. Other documents also show that John King(13) was guardian to Michael King(142) son of Henry King (14). Court documents show that at least four other children of Henry and Catherine were still minors in 1717, indicating dates of birth after 1696. The only child apparently of age at the time of the death of Henry was a son, Henry(141). The young ages of the children of Henry and Catherine would surely eliminate Catherine as being Catherine Clarke of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. If this were so, why would they wait so long to have children? This simply did not happen in those days. Besides, it can be shown that there was another Henry King in the Isle of Wight County, probably the one who had patented land there earlier.

The fact that Henry(14) came to the Salmon Creek area from the Middle Swamp of Bennets Creek area is shown in a 1744 Chowan County deed in which Henry King of Bertie County sold 304 acres in Chowan County "on a swamp known by the name of Middle Swamp as by patent bearing date 7 Sep 1701 to Henry King of Albemarle County." The metes and bounds shown in this deed agrees with those of the 1701 patent to Henry King(14). This would imply that Henry King(141) was selling land inherited from his father. There is further evidence of this in the will of Henry King(14). In his will Henry left his sons Henry King and Michael King "land in Nansemond County between the flat swamp and the third swamp." It must be remembered that until 1728 the area that included Middle Swamp was considered a part of Nansemond County. It was in a grey area in which patents were issued by both Virginia and North Carolina. It was administered by the Colony of Virginia.

Children of Henry(14) as shown by his will were-
	Henry(141)
	Michael(142)
	Charles(143)
	Elizabeth(144)
	Catherine(145)
	Ann(146)
	Mary(147)

All, except possibly Henry(14), were apprently born after 1696. The age of Henry(14) cannot be determined with certaity. Since he was granted land in 1701 he was apparently born before 1680.
